This website is part of a comprehensive program to provide accessible cinema in Australia.  This includes the funding of equipment and promotional support for 12 independent cinemas around the country, provided by the Federal Department of Health and Ageing.  

On this site you will find all that you need to know about captioning and audio description in Australian cinemas and the rest of the world.  You can check session times for all of the accessible cinemas in Australia, get information about the accessible movies that are playing, link to accessible trailers (both audio described and captioned) and find out the latest in accessible cinema news.

Cinema Nova tweets its accessible sessions

Cinema Nova, in Carlton Melbourne, has begun tweeting its movie sessions on Twitter, including its captioned and audio described sessions.

Rejection reasons revealed for cinema temporary exemption application

The Australian Human Rights Commission has released the full details of its rejection of the major cinema chains’ application for a temporary exemption from complaints under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992.

New cinema caption viewing system on show in the USA

The USA’s Doremi Cinema has showcased its new closed caption viewing system for hearing impaired movie audiences at the recent ShoWest cinema exhibition in Las Vegas.

Cinema CEOs step in to talk about access

At the Deafness Forum Deafness Sector Summit in Sydney today, Parliamentary Secretary for Disabilities Bill Shorten announced that he and Communications Minister Stephen Conroy had met with the four CEOs of the major cinema chains to discuss cinema access. This happened just after the AHRC decision.

Disruption to Hoyts Carousel screenings of captioned movies

23 April 2010

Media Access Australia has been notified that due to an equipment upgrade at Hoyts Carousel in Perth, the cinema is unable to screen captioned films until the upgrade is complete.  At this stage, no details have been provided as to when this may be.  

MAA will advise patrons when sessions recommence, or contact the cinema independently.
